What Are Some Speech Differences with an Italian Accent Compared to American English
The Italian language is considered to be a love language which is spoken very differently when compared to American English. Many Italian accented speakers may sound monotone and/or have large glides and slides on the vowel sounds that don’t match the American model for English. Italian speakers tend to stress the second to the last syllable in a sentence. English stress patterns vary depending where the speaker wants to place emphasis on a word in their statement. Due to the melody pattern of the Italian language, often it is spoken with too much force overall that can create a distraction for some listeners. American English is pronounced from the mouth but due to the additional force applied, Italian can often resonate in the lower throat or nasal cavity.
There are also consonant and vowel sounds that are mispronounced. Often the /r/ sound is trilled and /th/ is pronounced with a /t/ or /d/ substitution due to that sound not being a part of the Italian language. Some vowel sounds are mispronounced due to the sounds not existing in the Italian language or are not being placed correctly in the mouth cavity. These habits can make English harder to understand or become distracting due to the unique difference between the two languages.
