What Are Some Speech Differences with a German Accent Compared to American English?
One of the more unique features of the German language when compared to American English is the melody pattern known as intonation. Often German speakers have a melody pattern that is mostly monotone with shorter syllable segments. The shorter sound segments tend to be spoken with much more force in comparison. As a result, messages unintentionally sound abrupt or are perceived as angry. Some of our clients have commented that they have received feedback that their communication style comes across as abrupt or angry sounding. Of course this is not true. It is a unique difference between the two languages.
German and English have other differences. There are also consonant and vowel sound differences such as replacing /th/ with a /t/ or /d/ sound, mispronouncing /ing/ and the German /r/ is often pronounced in the back of the lower throat, similar to the French /r/. There are pronunciation differences with some vowel sounds as well.
