What Are Some Sound Differences with the French Accent When Compared to American English
In general, one of the most noticeable differences with French accented speakers is to speak English in a flat, monotone melody pattern. When this occurs, there are no pitch rises or movement in the message. When speech is monotone, there tends to be an increase in speed which further creates an issue with clarity.
French has some consonants that are pronounced differently or don’t exist such as /th/ which is often substituted with a /t/ or /d/ sound. Depending where one is from there can be an /s/ or /z/ substitution. Often the sound /h/ is omitted in words which really pops in conversational English. The /r/ sound is produced too low in the throat creating a “guttural” sound.
The most notable difference is resonance. American English is pronounced in the mouth cavity, using oral resonance. No sounds in English are pronounced in the lower throat. Alternatively, French has nasal vowels that do not exist in English creating these unique differences in speech and voice.
